Case Study: Financial Independence for Grandparents with Intrepid Wealth

In 2011, I began working with a couple who were already proud grandparents. From the outset, it was clear their priorities were financial security, independence, and maintaining their lifestyle without the burden of financial stress. Additionally, they wanted to ensure their family could grow and thrive without worrying about finances.

Their primary goals were to enjoy life, travel, make significant purchases such as new cars or a home, and, above all, live with the peace of mind that they wouldn’t become a financial burden to their children later in life.

At the time, one partner was employed as a Sales and Accounts Manager, earning around $87,000 annually at the age of 61, while the other was focused on spending time with their grandchildren. They had built up a solid amount in superannuation and aimed to grow it further before retirement. My initial recommendation was to consolidate their superannuation accounts and transition them to an Investment Exchange Platform. This strategic move laid the foundation for steady growth in their portfolio.

By 2017, we advanced to the next stage of their financial plan. I recommended setting up a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) tailored to their specific needs. We adopted a diversified investment strategy, incorporating dividend-paying stocks, bonds, and income-generating real estate. This approach provided a reliable monthly income, ensuring their pension needs were met without depleting their capital.

Today, at the age of 75, they are enjoying a financially secure and comfortable retirement. They have expressed their gratitude for the guidance provided, acknowledging that without the decisions made along the way, they might not have achieved the financial freedom they enjoy today.

This successful outcome, however, wasn’t achieved in isolation. It was built on a foundation of trust and collaboration. Their willingness to trust the process and work closely with me as their financial planner was instrumental in reaching and exceeding their financial goals. This case highlights the importance of a true partnership between client and advisor in achieving long-term financial success.
