  • Achieving the Right Loan Structure With a Fast Formal Approval The Client’s Challenge

    Achieving the Right Loan Structure With a Fast Formal Approval The Client’s Challenge

    A client approached Intrepid Wealth wanting to refinance while remaining with their existing lender. Their goal was to access $500,000 in equity for investment purposes and structure their lending across multiple loan accounts in a way that suited both their personal preferences and investment strategy.

    At first, the existing lender indicated that the requested structure could be supported. However, after the applications were submitted, the lender advised that they would not proceed with the structure the client wanted.

    The alternative offered by the existing lender created several issues. It did not provide the client with their preferred three-loan structure, it would have placed the full lending amount against their family home, and it also resulted in higher repayments than other options available in the market.

    While the lender’s alternative was technically possible, the client was not comfortable with the way the debt would be structured against their family home. They also wanted a lending setup that gave them clearer separation between loan purposes and greater flexibility.

    Our Solution

    Rather than accepting a compromise that did not meet the client’s needs, Intrepid Wealth acted quickly to assess alternative lending options.

    We contacted multiple lenders, presented the client’s full scenario, and confirmed which lenders would support the preferred structure. After comparing the available options, we recommended refinancing to a major lender that could provide:

    • the full $500,000 cash-out amount for investment purposes;
    • the client’s preferred three-loan structure;
    • an offset account;
    • a combination of fixed and variable loan accounts;
    • interest-only repayments for three years;
    • access to premium loan features under one package fee; and
    • a lower monthly repayment outcome.

    Although refinancing to a new lender involved higher upfront costs than completing an internal refinance with the existing lender, the recommended option was approximately $300 per month cheaper. This meant the additional refinance cost was expected to be offset within a relatively short period.

    Once the client agreed to the revised strategy, Intrepid Wealth moved quickly to prepare and submit the two combined lending applications. After submission, formal approval was received from a major lender within half an hour. From the time the client agreed to the changes, it took just under 24 hours to achieve formal approval.

    The Outcome

    The client proceeded with the recommended refinance strategy and achieved the loan structure they had originally wanted, without needing to accept a structure they were uncomfortable with.

    They secured the required equity release, maintained their preferred loan account setup, gained access to the features they wanted, and benefited from a lower monthly repayment outcome. The refinance also allowed the lending term to be reset to 30 years, helping reduce repayments in line with the client’s goals.

    By challenging the initial lender outcome, comparing alternative lending policies and acting quickly, Intrepid Wealth delivered a solution that gave the client the right structure, lower repayments and greater confidence in their lending arrangements.

  • A Smarter Path to SMSF Transition

    A Smarter Path to SMSF Transition

    Situation

    A local husband and wife in their early 40s first came to Intrepid Wealth with modest superannuation balances and a clear focus on building long-term financial security.

    At the time, a straightforward Hub24 Super Accumulation Account was the most appropriate structure. This allowed their superannuation to grow organically while Intrepid Wealth managed their investment allocation in line with a growth risk profile.

    Over the following few years, their superannuation balances grew substantially. As their financial position became more sophisticated, it became clear they may benefit from transitioning to a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF), giving them greater control and flexibility over their retirement strategy.

    The Intrepid Wealth Approach

    Moving from an existing superannuation structure into an SMSF can often require selling down the current investment portfolio. This may create unnecessary costs, potential capital gains implications, and time out of the market, which can expose investors to avoidable risk.

    Rather than accepting this as the default approach, the Intrepid Wealth team identified a more efficient pathway.

    By arranging an in-specie transfer from the couple’s Hub24 Super account into a Hub24 investment account held in the name of the SMSF, they were able to retain their existing shares, equities, and ETFs without selling them down.

    The Outcome

    The couple successfully transitioned into their new SMSF structure while retaining their existing investment portfolio.

    This helped avoid unnecessary disruption, reduced the risk of being out of the market, and created a smoother, more cost-effective transition. The approach also gave them greater control and flexibility over their retirement strategy as their wealth continued to grow.

    Why This Matters

    This case highlights the value of proactive advice and looking beyond the obvious solution. Complex financial transitions do not always need to involve unnecessary cost, disruption, or risk.

    With the right strategy, Intrepid Wealth can help make important financial decisions clearer, smoother, and better aligned to long-term goals.

  • Unlocking Unexpected Retirement Income

    Unlocking Unexpected Retirement Income

    Client Situation

    During a routine review, an Intrepid Wealth client raised concerns about cash flow in retirement and asked about increasing withdrawals from their self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF). The client believed this was their only option, as they had always assumed they were ineligible for the Age Pension due to receiving a defined benefit income stream following the death of their spouse and owning a property worth over $3 million.

    The Intrepid Wealth Approach

    As part of Intrepid Wealth’s holistic review process, our adviser conducted a deeper assessment of the client’s overall financial position—not just their superannuation. This included reassessing the treatment of the defined benefit income stream under Centrelink rules and reviewing the client’s assets against Age Pension thresholds.

    Our analysis confirmed that the defined benefit income stream (a police pension) was exempt from Centrelink’s income assessment and that the client’s assets were below the upper asset test limit. As a result, the client was eligible for a part Age Pension—something they had not previously expected.

    The Outcome

    With this new information, the client—with support from their family—successfully applied for the Age Pension. The application was approved, providing approximately $10,000 per year in additional income.

    This outcome reduced the need to draw additional funds from the client’s superannuation, helping their retirement savings last longer. Establishing the Age Pension also means the most complex part of the process is complete, providing greater certainty and flexibility for the future.

    Why This Matters

    This case highlights the value of proactive advice and a detailed understanding of Centrelink rules. Assumptions can lead to missed opportunities, and a fresh, expert review can make a meaningful difference to retirement outcomes.

    When Planning Extends Beyond One Generation

    For many families, financial planning is not only about preparing for retirement, but also about ensuring the next generation is equipped to manage and benefit from the wealth they will eventually inherit.

    In this case, the Jones family, a husband and wife with two adult children, wanted to take a proactive approach to both. Their goal was to secure their own retirement while also educating their children and preparing them for the responsibilities that come with future wealth transfer.

    Rather than treating these as separate conversations, the family recognised the value of addressing everything together in a structured and transparent way.

    As planning progressed, it became clear that involving all family members directly would be essential. Understanding the strategy, the reasoning behind it, and the long-term implications would help ensure alignment and avoid confusion in the future.

    A Collaborative Approach to Family Planning

    To support this, Shannon and PJ facilitated a joint session with all four family members present. This created an environment where everyone could engage in the process, ask questions, and gain clarity on how the plan would work in practice.

    During the session, the Statement of Advice (SOA) and detailed cashflow forecasts were presented and explained step by step. This allowed each family member to see not only the overall strategy, but also how decisions made today would shape outcomes over time.

    By bringing the entire family into the conversation, the focus shifted from simply delivering advice to building shared understanding and confidence.

    A key part of the strategy involved integrating the next generation into the family’s Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF). This step was designed to provide early exposure to how the structure operates, while also supporting a smoother and more informed transition of wealth in the future.

    Building Confidence Across Generations

    With a clear plan in place and a shared understanding among all family members, the Jones family is now better positioned to move forward with confidence.

    The parents can focus on their retirement knowing their strategy is aligned with long-term objectives, while the children gain valuable insight into financial management and the responsibilities that come with it.

    Importantly, the process helped create open communication around wealth, expectations, and future planning, reducing uncertainty and strengthening trust across generations.

    This reflects the approach taken by Intrepid Wealth Australia. Planning is not limited to individual outcomes, it considers the broader family context to ensure long-term continuity, clarity, and confidence.

    If you’re thinking about retirement while also preparing the next generation, a structured, family-focused approach can help create clarity and long-term confidence.

  • Helping a Client Regain Access to their Banking Portal

    Helping a Client Regain Access to their Banking Portal

    When Access Becomes a Barrier

    For many individuals, being able to securely access their banking platform is a fundamental part of staying in control of their finances. It enables visibility over cash flow, confidence in decision making, and peace of mind that everything is in order.

    In this instance, an Intrepid Wealth Australia client found themselves unexpectedly locked out of their banking portal. Despite multiple attempts to log in, reset credentials, and troubleshoot the issue independently, access could not be restored. The problem persisted across devices, making it increasingly difficult to identify the root cause.

    As time went on, the situation became more than just a technical inconvenience. Without access, the client was unable to review account balances, track recent transactions, or confidently manage upcoming financial commitments. What initially appeared minor began to impact their overall sense of financial control.

    Remote assistance was attempted, but without full visibility of the device setup and user interaction, it was not possible to resolve the issue with certainty.

    A Hands-On Approach That Made the Difference

    Recognising that the situation required a more direct approach, PJ arranged a personal visit to work through the issue in person. This allowed for a complete and accurate assessment of the environment, from device configuration and app settings to authentication processes.

    Working step by step, PJ was able to identify the underlying issue and restore access efficiently. Being physically present meant nothing was left to assumption, and the resolution could be implemented with confidence.

    Beyond resolving the immediate issue, PJ took the time to guide the client through the correct login process and explain how the platform functions. This included walking through key features, clarifying security steps, and ensuring everything was set up correctly to prevent similar issues in the future.

    The focus was not just on fixing the problem, but on ensuring the client felt comfortable and capable using the platform independently.

    Confidence Restored, Control Reclaimed

    With access fully restored, the client was able to regain visibility over their financial position and return to managing their finances without disruption.

    More importantly, the experience left them with a clearer understanding of how to use their banking platform, reducing reliance on support and increasing confidence in handling similar situations moving forward.

    This reflects the approach taken by Intrepid Wealth Australia. Support goes beyond advice alone, it extends into practical, real-world assistance that ensures individuals remain connected to their financial life.

    Taking the time to personally resolve what might appear to be a small issue demonstrates a deeper commitment to care, trust, and long-term relationships.

    If you’re experiencing challenges accessing your financial platforms or need support navigating digital tools, having the right guidance can make all the difference.

  • U.S. Inflation Report Arrives This Thursday — What It Could Reveal About the Fed’s Next Move

    U.S. Inflation Report Arrives This Thursday — What It Could Reveal About the Fed’s Next Move

    1. Setting the Stage: What’s Dropping This Thursday?

    The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will release the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August 2025 this Thursday (September 11, 2025) at 8:30 AM ET—a critical benchmark for gauging inflation trends.

    2. What Analysts Are Expecting

    Economic consensus suggests:

    • Headline CPI (12‑month change) will rise to around 2.9%, up from 2.7% in July—marking the highest annual rate since early 2025.
    • Core CPI (excluding food and energy) is projected to hold steady at approximately 3.1%, pointing to persistent underlying inflation.

    3. Why This Report Matters for Federal Reserve Policy

    This CPI data arrives amid growing expectations for the Fed to deliver rate cuts—and the numbers could make or break that narrative:

    • Labor market weakness: August’s dismal jobs data—just 22,000 new positions added, a sharp miss from forecasts—has already fueled strong bets on a September rate cut.
    • Market sentiment: Analysts from Standard Chartered now see a 50 basis point cut possible in September—double the previously expected 25 bps—while Bank of America forecasts two 25 bps cuts (September and December).
    • Yet inflation remains stubbornly elevated, including core measures, which may temper the Fed’s urgency to ease.

    4. Potential Scenarios & Market Reactions

    Report OutcomeImplications for Fed PolicyMarket Response
    Higher‑than‑expected CPI/coreFed may hesitate or delay cutsBond yields rise; dollar strengthens; equity volatility
    In line with expectations (~2.9%, 3.1%)Supports mild easing pathMarkets may rally on growing confidence
    Lower‑than‑expected readingsBolsters case for multiple cutsYields drop; equities likely gain strongly

    Even if a cut seems likely, historical trends show that markets don’t always respond favorably when cuts follow weak fundamentals—such as declining job numbers. About 40% of instances since 1980 saw stocks fall one month after cuts driven by economic softness; 37% and 27% declined over the following six and twelve months, respectively.

    5. Broader Context: Fed’s Tightrope

    At its July 2025 meeting, the Fed held rates steady at 4.25%–4.50%, sticking to a “wait-and-see” stance amid tariff-related inflation risks, while some board members voted for earlier easing.

    Now, with price pressures still above the Fed’s 2% inflation target and a sluggish jobs report in hand, the central bank faces a delicate balancing act: ease too fast, and inflation may resurge; hold too long, and economic weakness deepens.

    6. What to Watch in Thursday’s CPI Data

    • Headline & Core CPI: Are inflation readings still sticking above targets?
    • Category breakdowns: Is service-sector inflation—typically stickier—elevated?
    • Tariff impact: Are goods prices still rising due to import costs?

    Interpretation:

    • Persistent inflation signs likely delay or soften rate cut decisions.
    • Disinflationary signals, especially in core metrics, could signal room for one or more cuts as early as September.

    Bottom Line

    This Thursday’s CPI report couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. While the recent labor weakness has heightened expectations for a Fed easing cycle, the inflation numbers will critically influence whether those expectations become a reality. A soft CPI could embolden the Fed to act in September; a resilient CPI may lead them to wait and tread more carefully. Markets, meanwhile, should be prepared for any volatility—because all bets are still very much in play.

  • Time-Critical Superannuation Strategy Before 30 June

    Time-Critical Superannuation Strategy Before 30 June

    The Client’s Challenge

    A new client engaged Intrepid Wealth for financial planning advice. While preparing their strategy, we identified a time-sensitive opportunity that could make a meaningful difference to their long-term superannuation position.

    The client still had remaining non-concessional contribution cap available for the current financial year. We also identified that they may be eligible to access the bring-forward contribution rules in the following financial year.

    However, there was an important complication. The client’s existing superannuation balance was made up of a 100% taxable component. This meant careful planning was required to avoid mixing contribution components in a way that could compromise the tax-free status the new funds.

    With 30 June fast approaching, waiting until the full Statement of Advice was finalised may have meant the client missed the opportunity to act in time.

    Our Solution

    We determined that the strategy was material and time-critical, and that acting before the end of the financial year was in the client’s best interests.

    Intrepid provided clear, timely guidance to help the client:

    • utilise their remaining non-concessional contribution cap before 30 June;
    • preserve eligibility to use the bring-forward rules in the following financial year;
    • segregate funds appropriately to avoid unnecessarily mixing taxable and tax-free components; and
    • protect the intended tax-free status of their non-concessional contributions.

    This proactive approach allowed the client to take advantage of available contribution opportunities without compromising the structure of their superannuation benefits.

    The Outcome

    The client acted on the recommended steps before the financial year deadline and was extremely satisfied with Intrepid Wealth’s forward thinking and initiative.

    By identifying the issue early and providing timely strategic advice, we helped the client make the most of their superannuation contribution options while maintaining a tax-effective structure for the future.
